“Walk the Rock” was created in memory of a beloved friend, Jeannie Priolo, who we recently lost to oral cancer. Our goal is to raise awareness to this invasive disease and minimize the incidence rate.
Oral cancer is often referred to as the “silent killer’ because there are often no symptoms. Sixty-six percent of people aren’t diagnosed until the cancer has progressed to stage III or IV and approximately half of those victims will die within 5 years. While all other cancer rates are on the decline, the incidence rate of oral cancer is actually increasing. If caught early, oral cancer has one of the highest overall treatment and survival rates!
All profits from the event will go directly to The Oral Cancer Foundation which is a national public service, non-profit entity designed to reduce suffering and save lives through prevention, education, research, advocacy, and support activities. For more information about the rates of occurrence, risk factors which lead to oral cancer, signs and symptoms, treatments, current research, and current oral cancer related news.
Last year we successfully accomplished our goal and raised over $15,000 for The Oral Cancer Foundation! Many thanks to our sponsors and many walkers who came out to brave the Nor’easter last year! This event was a great success due to everyone’s generosity and courage!
Come join us again this year for a fun-filled day for the entire family! The event will again begin at scenic Nelson Park and a reception will follow at the East Bay Grille with food, live band entertainment, and a raffle. We will also be awarding great prizes for those who raise the most $$ in sponsorships! There will also be a prize given to the person with the best “Genie” costume, to honor our friend Jeannie Priolo.
